image Almost half of British parents have taken their children on a holiday to Spain or elsewhere during school term time, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by Opinion Matters on behalf of Teletext found that 46 per cent of adults have done this in the past.

Of those polled, 17 per cent admitted they lied to their child's school, blaming the absence on illness or that they were delayed in returning to the UK.

More than 88 per cent of respondents said that taking family holidays is important, while 39 per cent claimed they would avoid taking term time breaks if they had more choice.

Commenting on the findings, Victoria Sanders, managing director at Teletext Holidays, said: ''There's no escaping the fact that prices will always be higher when demand is at its peak, but there are still ways to save money on a family break."

According to research published earlier this month by travel guide site Simon Seeks, 60 per cent of holidaymakers plan to spend between £250 and £500 on a break this summer.
