image Brits taking holidays in Spain have been advised not to automatically opt for the cheapest insurance policy they come across.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA - The Travel Association, said that in most cases, the cheapest protection provides the lowest level of cover.

He noted that travel insurance is particularly important at the moment due to the threat of flight disruption brought on by the Icelandic ash cloud.

Mr Tipton urged holidaymakers to ensure they take out a policy that suits all of their personal needs.

"If you, or anybody in your party, has a pre-existing medical condition [make sure] that you discuss that with your travel agent or the insurance company when you purchase the policy as this may affect your cover," he added.

A study published earlier this year by Essential Travel revealed that many major tourism companies charge around 50 per cent more than average for holiday insurance.
